It was hard to get it right and they had to stay late to practise.

（2）We hope that we can visit the United States this year. 我们希望年内能访问美国。
（3）Everyone hopes for success. 每个人都希望成功。
2、wish v. 希望，多用于与事实相反的情况，尤用于难于实现或不可能实现的愿望。
（1）I wish I were as young as you.我要是像你们那么年轻该多好啊！
（2）I wish (that) I had met that good teacher 10 years ago.我要是10年前遇到那么好的老师就好了。
（3）It was no use wishing for a miracle.只是盼望出现奇迹没什么用。

Dust flew up round the horses' hooves.

They ran very fast.

"Slow down! Take care!" the driver shouted at the horses.
pulled up (车子) 停下

司机对着马儿大叫到：慢点，小心 take care！
The driver looked at the children with astonishment.
"What are you kids doing out here in the desert?" he gasped.
astonishment /stnmnt/ 惊讶
司机惊讶地看着孩子们。
他大吃一惊：孩子们，你们在沙漠中干嘛呢？你们怎么会在沙漠中？

"I'll take you to the next town," said the driver, "and hand you to the sheriff."

The children sat on a seat on top of the stagecoach.

The edge of the trail was bumpy and cracked.
The stagecoach began to rock.
bumpy 不平的、颠簸的 that means "not even; with a lot of bumps"
crack 裂开 to break without dividing into separate parts 没有完全分开，有点裂开了

马车开始剧烈摇晃。
The wheels ran into a deep crack in the ground.
轮子陷进了路面的裂缝里。
The horses bucked.
The driver pulled the reins.
Then the wheels sank deeper into the crack and the stagecoach stopped with a jerk.
